Mens sana in corpore sano -- a sound mind in
a sound body.
These Latin words are reflections of an old
Greek ideal from ancient Athens -- that students, if not all
members of society, must have a balance of both mind and body;
that a student must be trained and adept in the realms of both
intellect and physique.
With this in mind, the school has developed
a very effective athletics program. It consists of a variety of
development activities open to all students -- Physical Education
classes, and Intramural sports. The Ateneo de Manila High
School, like the University, is also a member in numerous
inter-school athletics leagues, such as the University Athletic
Association of the Philippines (UAAP) junior division, as well
as the Private Schools Athletic Development Association (PRADA),
Philippine Athletic Youth Association (PAYA), Jesuit Athletic
Meet (JAM), Rizal Football Association (RIFA), Inter-Scholastic
Sports Association (ISSA), Inter-School Tennis Association (ISTA),
Athletic Association of Private Schools (AAPS), and the Small
Basketeers of the Philippines-Passerelle (SBP-Passerelle)
sports associations.
The school has distinguished itself with its
track record as one of the best schools in interschool
athletics, bagging numerous championships year after year. It
also has its share of great Ateneo athletes who have brought
glory not only to the school but also to the country.
Through the athletics program, the school
aims to add to the well-roundedness of its students, expanding
their capabilities, building on their strengths, and most
importantly, teaching them the value of working together as a
team. The school aims to instill the ideals of
sportsmanship in each student, teaching him how to play fair, to
lose without excuses, to win without boasting, to seek to
improve himself, to offer himself, and to enjoy the richness of
his athletic heritage.
